Our first mission

was to provide a preschool education and a feeding program for the most impoverished children in the villages. This vision quickly expanded to provide a post-eighth-grade education for academic and vocational skills training at Kivu Hills Academy. This school will also be a multi-generational educational facility providing skill development for learners of all ages. The ultimate goal is to cultivate future teachers and leaders for the community and the country.

Kivu Hills Academy

Kivu Hills Academy (KHA)

is the first and only high school in Boneza. The humble school opened in January 2016 with just 21 students. Today, student numbers continue to climb, educating hundreds with our hands-on curriculum.

THE CURRICULUM

includes specialty trades in construction and masonry, agriculture, computer science, tourism, and student-led businesses including a bakery and soap making.

The Campus

KHA is an impressive campus comprised of an admin block (staff offices, a computer lab and library), ten classrooms, a kitchen and dining hall, two dormitories for students, the Valmark Arena, the ARM Mission House for visitors, agricultural farms, a Cultural Center, and a student-run bakery. The campus will also be a multi-generational educational facility providing vocational skill training for all ages.

“I am living my dream at Kivu Hills Academy. I am studying computer systems and I have a dream to be the first computer engineer in Boneza. Thank you for giving me an opportunity in life by sending me to school. Please consider giving a scholarship to another eager student.”

“Now I have hope. At Kivu Hills Academy, we have three meals a day, which we don’t get at my house. We have wonderful teachers that believe in us. The sky is the limit for me. My heart breaks when I return to my village and see many of my friends are not going to school because their families can’t afford it.”

The KHA Scholarship Tuition Assistance Fund provides for the students in need of financial support. For this school year a scholarship of $600 per student helps cover costs such as three meals a day, dorm accommodations, our hands-on curriculum, school supplies, and extracurricular activities.

Our goal in the 2023/2024 school year is to provide 300 scholarships for the KHA Scholarship Tuition Assistance Fund.

Preschools

Six preschools

facilitate the younger learners throughout the villages of Nkira, Bushaka, Kabihogo, Remera, and on the island of Bugarura in Boneza.

Each school has a growing number of teachers and assistants to provide quality education and a daily feeding program to nurture these future leaders.

The Preschool Campaign

is an ongoing opportunity to provide education to a young learner in Boneza. Send a child to preschool for a full year with a $50 donation. This donation provides school materials, teacher salaries and a nutritious meal everyday.

100% of donations dedicated to preschools support preschool student scholarships.

Looking Back

In 2010, John Gasangwa first identified the need for preschool education in the villages of Boneza. With the support and cooperation of the local leaders, the first preschool opened for 30 youngsters from ages 3 to 6. These children were the first recipients of a daily nourishing meal, and the foundation of the first classes. John knew from experience that students can’t learn on a malnourished stomach and that God’s love would shine through in the blessings of nourished body and mind. As a proud symbol of the achievement of going to school, each child wears a uniform and contributes to their education.

The first school was in a community building with no door and no windows and then as if to give another challenge, the roof blew off. None of these obstacles thwarted the efforts of the village and ARM. Loving teachers and their aids, village leaders, and parents, with the support of ARM, all worked together to provide the needed resources to make the first class successful.
